Mahi Binebine is one of Morocco’s most famous painters and visual artists. In addition to his paintings sold worldwide, he is also known for his sculptures and fascinating novels, the most famous of which is Les étoiles de Sidi Moumen, a book about the painful terrorist events in Casablanca. This story was brought to the screen by Nabil Ayouch. He is also the author of other stories such as Le Seigneur vous le rendra, Les Funérailles de lait, L’Ombre du poète, Le fou du roi, Rue du Pardon, etc.
Born in Marrakech in 1959, he left in the early 1980s to study in Paris and became a professor of mathematics. He then went to New York, where he settled for six years before returning to Paris, to return to Marrakech in 2002.
Behind the broad smile from the bottom of his heart, Mahi Binebine hides the pain he once endured when his father, Fakih Binebine, who taught Arabic literature, abandoned his wife and seven children and his small family to start a new one. His son, Aziz Binebine, was arrested during the Skhirat coup d’état, despite his proximity to HM King Hassan II. This was the only way Mahi’s father could show his loyalty to his king, who insisted on finding him a new wife.
Mahi Binebine came to painting late. His first “scribbles” date back to the age of 26 before becoming one of Morocco’s most important painters. His paintings are exhibited at the Guggenheimer Museum in New York and participate in the most beautiful international exhibitions.
