El Mamounia is not only one of the best hotels in the world, but also a historical masterpiece that has hosted prestigious personalities such as Queen Elizabeth and former American presidents Franklin Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan, as well as the German Chancellor Helmut Kohl and former French President Jacques Chirac for decades, former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who stayed at the hotel so often that his administration dedicated a pavilion to his name, or the giants Charlie Chaplin and Alfred Hitchcock who filmed scenes from his film “The Man Who Knew Too Much”, not to mention Charles Aznavour, Jean-Paul Gautier, Claude Lelouch, Elton John and Catherine Deneuve.
El Mamounia was founded in 1923, but its walls date back to the Almohad era, before becoming a vast garden dedicated by Sultan Alawi Mohammed ben Abdallah to his son El Mamoune, on the occasion of his marriage. This explains the origin of its name, which many historical sources confirm.
Designed by the famous French architect Henri Brost, Casablanca architect, and the French painter Jacques Majorelle decorated many of its rooms. The hotel is characterized by its magnificent decor, rich and sophisticated Victorian-inspired furniture and lush gardens that include various types of palm trees, plants and flowers. It extends over an area of 7 hectares, arranged in the Moroccan-Andalusian style.
The hotel has undergone several renovations, the most important of which was carried out under the reign of the late HM King Hassan II who wanted to give it the Moroccan touch that has remained to this day, which gives it a particular charm and unequaled luxury. The same was done by his son, His Majesty King Mohammed VI, who gave instructions in 2006 for the renovation of the hotel, investing 120 million euros, according to media reports, before reopening its doors after three years of work by Japanese people.
