Electric Power: Record Trade Balance Surplus

The trade balance of electricity energy recorded a surplus of MAD381 million (MDH) at the end of October 2019, and for the first time, instead of a deficit of MAD2.2 billion (MDH) a year earlier, according to the Exchange Office.

This situation is due to the combined effect of the decrease of 2.07 MMDH or (-94%) of imports and the increase of exports of 511 MMD, explains the Office which has just published its foreign trade indicators for the month of October 2019.

Indeed, the electricity trade balance was characterized by “a structural change” in the first ten months of 2019, the Office notes, noting that the coverage rate has increased from 0.6% to 364.6%.

For their part, trade in goods was marked by a 3.1% increase in the trade deficit to nearly -174 MMDH at the end of October 2019 from -168.8 MMDH a year earlier, according to the same source.

This result is explained by a higher increase in imports (+12.1 MMDH) than exports (+6.9 MMDH). The coverage rate remained stable at 57.5%.
