Senior Tourism: A Niche to Explore

The scale that ecotourism and senior tourism are now taking on is so important that they are now becoming a major trend in the global holiday market, according to L’Economiste in its report published this Wednesday. The newspaper says that Morocco would benefit from positioning itself in this increasingly important market, adding that study trips for seniors have become a major trend. Moreover, a recent seminar organized in Marrakech by the International Association of Universities of the Third Age (AIUTA), in collaboration with the Private University of Marrakech, made it possible to better understand the potential of this type of tourism in Morocco.

It should be noted that in France, universities of the third age host no less than 350,000 students. “For some years now, universities of the elderly have been hosting study tours that allow students to undertake activities that can complement the content of their curriculum, whether formal or non-formal,” according to a source cited by the daily.

The Economist points out that each destination has the potential to offer a unique combination of knowledge, social capital and a creative environment that allows the destination to be particularly adapted to specific activities, Morocco’s potential is very interesting since, according to AIUTA, 40,000 senior foreigners have chosen to stay in Morocco for a long time, especially French people (between 20,000 and 25,000 pensioners). The British placed themselves just after, followed by the Germans.

We also learn that, in 10 years’ time, the million residents from Europe should be reached. “There is still no public tourism and university policy in favor of retired people,” notes Mohsine El Ahmadi, professor at the FSJES Cadi Ayyad. It is obvious that the country’s tourism authorities must work hard to put in place the necessary offers and incentives to enable Morocco to take full advantage of this niche.
