The Electric Power Sector Is Doing Well in Morocco

The national production of electrical energy maintains its good momentum, recording a performance of +19.5% at the end of October 2019, after +7.5% one year earlier, according to the Directorate of Studies and Financial Forecasts (DEPF), under the Ministry of Economy, Finance and Administrative Reform.

This result stems, in particular, from the good performance of private output, up 37% after +8.2%, and that of projects developed under Law 13-09, up 48.1% after +73.3%, mitigated by the decline in that of the ONEE, down 18.4% (after +2.2%), explains the DEPF in its December economic outlook note.

In parallel with this trend, the balance of electricity trade with Algeria and Spain (imports-exports) fell by 123.1% at the end of October 2019, resulting from a fall in the volume of imported energy of 86.8%, against an increase in that exported of 557.7%, in a context of an increase in net energy demand of 4.1%, after +0.5% at the end of October 2018.

At the end of the first 10 months of the year, national consumption of electrical energy rose by 0.8%, after a 1.8% decline a year ago, driven by a 9.9% increase in medium voltage energy consumption, a 7.2% increase in low voltage energy consumption and a 1.8% increase in consumption by distributors, adds the DEPF.
