Morocco Reviews its Free Trade Agreement with Turkey

After realizing the heavy losses recorded in particular in the textile and clothing sectors, Morocco decided to request the revision of its free trade agreement with Turkey. This decision was approved and announced through a joint declaration of the two countries, made at the end of the business meeting recently held on the sidelines of the 5th session of the joint committee in charge of monitoring the implementation of the free trade agreement between the two countries.

The two parties, which will assess the progress made by the two countries since the signing of the agreement until the end of January 2020, agreed on the review decision, following in particular the statement made by Moulay Hafid Alami, Minister of Industry, Trade and the Green and Digital Economy, who threatened to break the agreement if no solution was found. Reacting swiftly to Morocco’s request, Turkey sent its Foreign Minister, Rohsar Pakjan, to Morocco to ease the atmosphere and save what can be saved so that the agreement can remain in force.

Having been seriously affected by some of the terms of the agreement, Morocco calls on Turkey to invest in the local market and encourage Moroccan exports on the basis of mutual interest, balance and cooperation, according to the statement made by Moulay Hafid Alami at the meeting organized by the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Green and Digital Economy, in partnership with the Moroccan Agency for Investment and Export Development, the Turkish Ministry of Trade and the Turkish Council for Foreign Economic Relations.

It should be noted that Turkish exports to Morocco during the year 2019 have reached a growth rate of 16% compared to 2018.
