The Moroccan engineer and scientist, Rachid Yazami, was honored, Tuesday in Dubai, by the Mohammed Ben Rached Medal for scientific excellence in the “Life Achievements” category, in recognition of his eminent scientific research and inventions, particularly in the field of lithium-ion battery technology.
The Moroccan scientist received his medal from the hands of Sheikh Mohamed ben Rached Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Governor of Dubai, at a ceremony attended by Emirati personalities and elite scientists and researchers.
This acknowledgment is the highest distinction granted by the United Arab Emirates to eminent scientists who have made significant contributions and achievements during their careers.
On the same occasion, Lourdes Vega, Director of the Carbon and Hydrogen Dioxide Research and Development Center and Professor of Chemical Engineering at Khalifa University of Science and Technology in Abu Dhabi, was also honored. Lourdes Vega holds a doctorate in physics from the University of Seville in Spain, in cooperation with the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of California in the United States.
On this occasion, Mohammed ben Rached Al Maktoum congratulated the two recipients for their role in promoting human civilization and their contributions to the use of their knowledge for the well-being of people, stressing the importance of putting more effort and exploring new opportunities offered by science.
Yazami expressed his gratitude for this acknowledgment, seeing it as “an honour for science and scientists”.
Yazami’s scientific career (67 years old) is divided between several countries (France, Japan, the United States of America and Singapore). He has many inventions, including an intelligent chip that makes it possible to recharge the battery in less than ten minutes and avoids the risks of high battery temperature.
In 2014, Yazami received the Draper Prize from the National Academy of Engineering in Washington, D.C., considered the equivalent of a Nobel Prize for engineers, in recognition of his contribution to the development of lithium-ion batteries in the 1990s.
The Mohamed ben Rached Medal for Scientific Excellence was established in 2017 to honor scientists, researchers and specialists who have made unique and outstanding achievements. It aims to strengthen their position in society and their role in creating an environment that fosters creativity, scientific research and the qualification of a new generation of Emirati scientists and researchers.
