Moroccan Distinction at the African Karate Championship in Tangier

Morocco won 19 medals (9 gold, 4 silver and 6 bronze) at the end of the kumite events (cadets and juniors), held during the second day of the African Karate Championship, which was to end yesterday at the Ziaten covered hall in Tangier.

The gold medals were won, in the cadet category, by Hiba Fellaoui (-45kg), Sawsane Benchbab (-54kg), Aya Ouhra (+54kg) and Zaid Boudouche (-52kg), as well as the karatekas Abdelali Jina (-61kg), Said Oubaya (-68kg), Abdelkarim Asaas (-76kg), Hanane Mellal (-59kg) and Meryam Ajaray who also won gold in the junior category. For their part, Mehdi Sriti (+76kg), Farida Mrabet Lemti (-48kg), Youssef El Hafidi (+70kg) and the senior national team (women) won the silver medal on this day.

The same day was marked by the performances of Nadir Ouazzani Semmari (-63kg), Wadie Sassiou (-63kg), Karima Blita (+70kg), Ikram Hilali (-53kg), Hicham Bekkali (-55kg) and the senior national team (men) who won bronze medals.

On the first day, Morocco won six medals including two gold medals at the end of the kata events (cadets and juniors). The Moroccans Salah Eddine El Mansoury (cadets) and Abdelmounim Maanaoui (juniors) won the two gold medals after beating respectively the Egyptians Hussein Mohamed Hussein and Ramadan Tarek.

On their side, Marwa Salmi (cadets), Maryem El Kholti (juniors), the two national teams women won four silver medals bringing the number of medals won by Morocco to six.

At the end of these two days, Morocco occupied the first place in the overall ranking with a total of 25 medals (11 gold, 8 silver and 6 bronze), ahead of Egypt, second with 25 medals (8 gold, 12 silver and 5 bronze), while Algeria is third with 8 medals (4 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze).

Organized by the Royal Moroccan Federation of Karate and Associated Disciplines (FRMK), the Championship, which was attended by 400 karatekas representing 29 African countries, is at its 19th edition for the senior category, its 11th for the juniors and its 3rd for the cadets. The best karatekas of the continent will take part in this competition in order to provide them with points for the qualification for the Olympic Games 2020 in Tokyo.

In addition to the official competitions, the championship program included several activities, such as a training session for referees, the referee classification exam and the accreditation of African coaches in the disciplines of kata and kumite.
