Death of Jean Daniel: The Condolences of King Mohammed VI

King Mohammed VI sent a message of condolence to Michèle Daniel and Sarah Daniel following the death of the founder, director and editorial writer of the Nouvel Observateur, Jean Daniel.

In this message, the King said he learned “with great sadness the death of Mr. Jean Daniel at the end of a life nourished by passion, commitment and a professional ethic that knew how to make room for debate and contradiction with constancy, elegance and courtesy”.

The Sovereign affirms that Jean Daniel, a witness and actor of his time, followed and often accompanied the most significant stages of Morocco’s contemporary history, in whose evolution he always took the greatest interest. The King notes that he, like many of his compatriots, preciously remembers that it was to Mr Jean Daniel that his father, the late King Hassan II, gave his last interview on 6 July 1999, two weeks before his death.

“This last mark of confidence marked with the seal of friendship a journey shared in mutual respect, and it is in this memory that I wish to assure you here of all my sympathy and ask you to believe in the assurance of my compassion and consideration,” the message concludes.
