Royal Pardon for 5,654 prisoners (Department of Justice)

HM King Mohammed VI has granted a pardon for the benefit of 5,654 prisoners and ordered that all necessary measures be taken to strengthen the protection of prisoners within penitentiary institutions, particularly against the spread of the Coronavirus epidemic, the Justice Ministry announced.

“As part of the constant attention granted by His Majesty, may God assist him, to his subjects detained in the penitentiary and rehabilitation institutions, Amir Al Mouminine has granted His Royal Grace for the benefit of 5,654 inmates,” the ministry said in a statement issued on Sunday.

The prisoners benefiting from this Royal Grace were selected on the basis of human and strictly objective criteria, which take into consideration their age, their precarious state of health and the length of their imprisonment, as well as the good discipline, good behavior and good conduct they have shown throughout their incarceration, the same source said.

The Department states that, given the exceptional circumstances associated with the state of health emergency and the precautions it imposes, this process will be carried out in successive stages.

Within this framework and in accordance with the High Royal Instructions, recipients of the Royal Pardon will be subjected to surveillance, medical testing and the necessary quarantine at their homes to ensure their safety.

“For purely humanitarian considerations, which His Majesty the King has always emphasized, with special attention to the protection of the health and safety of inmates, especially in these difficult circumstances, and the conditions they require to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus “COVID-19″ through the penitentiary and rehabilitation institutions, His Majesty the King, may God glorify him, has ordered that all necessary measures should be taken to strengthen the protection of inmates within these institutions, especially against the spread of this epidemic,” the Ministry adds.
