Covid-19/France: Macron Plans to Meet Professor Didier Raoult

French President Emmanuel Macron traveled on Thursday to Marseille, where he will meet Didier Raoult, a renowned professor and great defender of Chloroquine as a treatment for the new Coronavirus.

The French head of state is expected this afternoon in this southern French city where he will meet with Didier Raoult, director of the IHU-Mediterranean, who is currently concluding a study on the use of hydroxychloroquine with his teams, according to the country’s media.

“We are in the process of finishing the analysis. Things are very reassuring on this treatment on which we have not had any trouble,” Didier Raoult said Wednesday in a video posted on YouTube.

Earlier in the day, the French president visited the Kremlin-Bicêtre University Hospital in the Paris suburbs, where he met with the university hospital staff involved in clinical research against Covid-19.

The head of state discovered there the “various clinical trials conducted to identify treatments against the virus”. “In particular the therapeutic studies conducted under the aegis of the Discovery program (INSERM) and the Corrimuno study, developed by the APHP in connection with the REACTing network”, explained the Élysée, without mentioning the treatment of Chloroquine.

According to Le Figaro, in an interview with Professor Raoult, who has chosen to withdraw from the scientific council, set up by the President to inform government decisions in the fight against the epidemic, “Emmanuel Macron hopes to reintegrate him into the decision-making chain and show that the executive is not overlooking any track to fight the Coronavirus”.

The executive, initially skeptical about the use of Chloroquine as a treatment for Covid-19 because of its potential side effects, finally gave in to pressure from part of the scientific community and the political world, authorizing the medication but only in serious cases.

Various clinical trials are currently being conducted in France to identify treatments against the new Coronavirus, even though the country has passed the 10,000 death mark caused by Covid-19, according to the latest assessment by the health authorities.
