El Mostafa Ramid: The Islamic Jurist

El Mostafa Ramid was born in the region of Sidi Bennour (province of El Jadida). He settled in Casablanca, without getting rid of the customs of Doukkala, from the period of his secondary studies until his appearance as a member of the opposition, during the period when his party was not yet in power.

He is considered one of the most important leaders of the Justice and Development Party (PJD) and one of its main supporters. Since his party came to power, he has been in charge of the Justice portfolio from 2012 to 2017, and then the Human Rights portfolio, which he still holds today; two sensitive ministerial departments that give even the most experienced politicians a hard time.

El Mostafa Ramid joined the preaching movement at the age of 14 when he joined Mutai’s Ahabiba Al Islamiya (Islamist Youth) in the early 1970s, an organisation that was accused of the assassination of socialist leader Omar Benjelloun. He was the first to join the Popular Constitutional Democratic Movement (MPDC), which opened its doors to Islamists and later became known as the PJD.

El Mostafa Ramid held several positions within his party and chaired its parliamentary group. After obtaining a law degree in 1984, he became a lawyer and distinguished himself by arguing vigorously in many cases, such as that of journalist Rachid Nini, when he was director of publication of the newspaper “Al Massae”, or that of his colleague Abdelilah Benkirane, when he was at the head of the newspaper “Attajdid”.
