The African Football Confederation announced on Tuesday that the Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to be held in Cameroon, will not take place in 2021. “As decided by the CAF executive committee, the CAN 2021 will not be held next January. Therefore, the competition is postponed to 2022,,” as reported on Twitter.
The CAF Executive Committee is currently holding a meeting by videoconference devoted to the review of the fate of African competitions as well as local championships as regards to the Coronavirus pandemic. A CAF source indicated that the members of the Committee have decided to postpone the CAN by one year, noting that this decision was motivated by the refusal of Cameroon to postpone the African competition in the summer due to the difficult climatic conditions. The same source stated that the Committee is aiming to continue the African Champions League in September in Cameroon.
According to a reliable source within CAF, Cameroon may host the two semi-finals and the final of the Champions League.
The Executive Committee is also considering organizing the semi-finals and the final of the CAF Cup in Morocco next September.
The Champions League semi-finals will be played between Raja of Casablanca and Zamalek of Egypt, while Wydad of Casablanca will take on the other Egyptian club Al Ahly.
It should be recalled that CAF decided to postpone the semi-finals of the Champions League and Confederation Cup last April due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
At the end of this crucial meeting, there will be a virtual press conference in the evening in the presence of the President of CAF, Ahmad Ahmad, to announce the decisions taken by the Executive Committee.
