Sebta/Mellilia: The New Decision of the Spanish Authorities

The Official Gazette of the Kingdom of Spain published a statement from the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, concerning the two occupied Moroccan cities, Sebta and Melillia.

The Spanish decision is to continue to prohibit access to the cities of Sebta and Melillia until August the 1st of this year. However, on the Moroccan side, the suspension of land, sea and air links is still maintained. Moreover, no date for the reopening of the borders has so far been set by the Moroccan authorities. The crossing points of the two Moroccan enclaves occupied by Spain will therefore remain closed on the Moroccan side until further notice.

It should be recalled that the Kingdom has authorized several exceptional operations to reopen its borders to some Moroccans stranded abroad under conditions previously established by the Moroccan authorities. However, neither the port of Sebta nor the port of Melillia were approached during these exceptional operations. This is due to Spain’s lack of preparation for this type of transit, according to press statements by Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans living abroad.
