Sports: A Strategic Sector for Morocco’s Development

HM King Mohammed VI sent a letter to the participants in the Second National Sports Conference in Skhirat (October 2008). This letter stressed the need to establish the practice of sport as one of the fundamental human rights and to facilitate access to it for men and women from all sectors of society.

In line with the spirit of the Royal Letter, the Ministry of Youth and Sports has developed an ambitious strategy to boost national sport in order to meet expectations. This strategy is based on the 2020 Foresight Vision, which aims to make the Kingdom a land of choice for sport and a breeding ground for champions. Sport is a key focus of the Government’s various plans and programs, which clearly reflects the Sovereign’s firm determination to give sport a prominent place and a fundamental role in the life of citizens and in the service of the nation.

Moreover, sport has the support of the government, local authorities and various socio-economic actors. It now serves as an important economic lever and a promising field for investment and job creation, in addition to playing an active role in Morocco’s influence on the international scene.

The King is particularly keen to support the sport sector by launching and inaugurating a number of sports facilities, drawing up a roadmap for the promotion of the sports and youth sector, firmly focusing on the deployment of financial resources, the qualification of the human element and the construction of sports facilities and local social and sports centers.
