The artist Giovanna Salva, who is passionate about travel, has drawn a very personal portrait of the capital of the Kingdom.
Having studied both anthropology and architecture, the publisher, writer and photographer Giovanna Salva has travelled and explored the narrow streets of the City of Light. She has taken several photographs of colors, landscapes and architecture. Today, as part of the Orleans Heritage Days 2020, in France, an exhibition by the Italian artist, entitled ”Diplopie” is being held at the Frac Centre-Val de Loire from June 17, 2020 to January 3, 2021.
“I explored Rabat with a relaxed attitude, seeing the nuances of daily life, wandering in the streets and trying to record everything that was happening around me. My research focused on the city and at the same time spread out around it, creating a strong contrast between reality and its representation.
Architectures, landscapes, as well as writings and colors create my images, often constructing an ironic set of references between the photographs. My attention is attracted in turn by modernist architectures, entrances, store windows, typography of store signs, … As a result, the photographs exist mainly as collective works, not only because of the narrative they share but also because of their singularities”, as the artist interprets the urban environment of the city.
In addition to the photographs, Giovanna Silva is also exhibiting four works in video format, offering an open window on her interpretation of the urban environment.
Giovanna Silva holds a degree in Architectural Science from the Milan Polytechnic School. She completed her training with a Master’s degree in Cultural Anthropology, Ethnology and Ethnolinguistics at the Università Ca’ Foscari in Venice.
From 2005 to 2007 she collaborated with the magazine “Domus” before becoming the photographic editor of the magazine “Abitare”. Also, as a photographic artist, she uses her knowledge of social sciences to capture the identity of the territories and to draw up their portraits.
By focusing on the influence of the political and social situation on the territory, Giovanna Silva sheds light on the lived reality of the cities and is interested in the spaces of everyday life, which by habit, sink into oblivion.
Through a series of large-format photographs, the artist captures, between reality and representation, modernist architecture and store signs to show Rabat as a narrative space.
