Morocco Normalizes its Relations with Israel

In an important historical step, Morocco announced on Thursday the normalization of its relations with Israel. It was a surprise for several observers who completely ruled out this decision, especially after the failure of U.S. President Donald Trump, the sponsor of the deal of the century, to win the elections a second time.

President Trump announced the news of normalization between the two countries through a tweet in which he describes this historic step of achievement and states that the United States recognizes, for the first time, Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara. A press release from the royal cabinet confirmed this, announcing Washington’s decision to open a consulate in the city of Dakhla.

For his part, Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu said: “I thank the Moroccan sovereign His Majesty King Mohammed VI for his historic decision to make peace with Israel. We will again open liaison offices in Israel and Morocco and then establish full diplomatic relations. We will also inaugurate a direct flight between Israel and Morocco, and peace will prevail. Strong relations bind Morocco and Israel and deep ties bind Morocco and the Jewish people. We all know that the kings of Morocco and the Moroccan people treated the Jews who lived there well.”

As for Gabi Ashkenazi, the Israeli Foreign Minister, he said in a post reported by the Ministry’s Facebook page entitled “Israel Speaks Arabic”: “I welcome this beautiful and important news and I salute the Moroccan sovereign King Mohammed VI for this good and courageous decision. The resumption of relations between us is an important step among the Abraham agreements that reflect the friendly and deep relations between peoples. I call on more countries to join the camp of the Abraham Agreements.”

Morocco, so far, is the last Arab and Islamic country to normalize, following the Emirates, Bahrain and Sudan a few months ago, while waiting for other countries to take this step, including Mauritania, the Sultanate of Oman and Saudi Arabia.

The announcement of normalization between Morocco and Israel has generated a wide controversy on Facebook, dividing opinions between supporters of this historic decision that advocates peace, being an intelligent diplomatic step of the Kingdom that has won the American recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara, and others who denounce this decision, describing it as a “betrayal of the Palestinian cause”.
