One of the major problems with electric vehicle (EV) technology is the speed of charging. The best available technologies cannot fully charge an EV battery (from 0 to 100%) in less than 60 minutes due to inherent side effects such as overheating and reduced battery life.
Rachid Yazami, a Moroccan researcher and entrepreneur, will discuss the technology he developed himself at the “French Lab Singapore”, an event to be held on 3 December this year to bring together Singapore’s academic and business research community. In concrete terms, this technology makes it possible to recharge the batteries of all electric vehicles in just 20 minutes, compared with about 1 hour at present, as proposed by the car manufacturers.
Experts in the field point to overheating and reduced battery life, which would have a direct impact on recharging time. It should also be pointed out that batteries account for more than 30% of the total cost of a vehicle purchase, with an estimated lifespan of between 8 and 10 years before they need to be replaced.
“By analysing current battery charging methods to find out their limits, we have come to the conclusion that it is necessary to reconsider techniques that are more than a century old, based on the application of a constant charging current and voltage monitoring, in order to innovate and perhaps revolutionise battery charging”, Rachid Yazami had already expressed his views on the subject.
“We have developed new methods of natural adaptive charging using a communication bus between the charger and the battery. “In this protocol, we do not impose any constant current or voltage on the cell,” he continued. On the contrary, we allow the battery to respond naturally to an increase in voltage at naturally variable rates”.
An innovative protocol that Professor Yazami has called “non-linear voltammetry” (NLV). It is the latter that allows a battery to be fully charged in less than 20 minutes. This is a technological process that he will be keen to develop within the framework of “French Lab Singapore”. Rachid Yazami, who has won numerous awards for his research work, received the 2019 Arab Investor Award at a forum held at UNESCO headquarters in Paris. He was also awarded the Mohamed Bin Rached Medal for scientific excellence in the “Life Achievements” category by the Sovereign of Dubai in 2020.
