Tangier Med beats the record for container traffic in the Mediterranean

The container activity of the Tangier Med port complex should exceed by 31 December 2020 the bar of 5.7 million TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) containers handled, i.e. a growth of +18% compared to 2019.

This performance represents a traffic never reached by the ports of the Mediterranean basin, said the Tangier Med Port Authority in a statement, noting that the level of productivity has also broken records this year, the bar of more than 500,000 containers handled per month having been exceeded 4 times so far in 2020, with a new record set in November of 553,164 TEU containers handled.

Other provisional port figures were announced during the supervisory board of the Tangier Med group held on December 22nd, the same source specified, stating that regarding the tonnage achieved, Tangier Med should end the year with nearly 80 million tons of goods handled, that is a progression of +23% compared to 2019, and that the port complex alone handles nearly half of the total port tonnage of the Kingdom of Morocco.

Moreover, the press release noted that despite the cessation of activity by certain manufacturers and the overall slowdown in economic activity, TIR truck traffic remained at the same level compared to 2019 and expects to close 2020 with nearly 350,000 TIR units.

These indicators show a real resilience of the port complex in the face of an epidemiological context that has strongly impacted international trade, said the Tangier Med Port Authority, adding that Tangier Med thus reaffirms its commitment to the largest port hubs such as Singapore, Rotterdam, Hamburg, Long Beach …, to ensure the continuity of global logistics chains.

“Tangier Med once again testifies to the relevance of the vision of King Mohammed VI for this strategic project located at the crossroads of maritime routes, as well as its driving role in the service of the national economy and world trade,” noted the same source.

In addition, a more detailed communication of the port balance sheet for 2020 will be presented in January 2021, the press release concluded.
