The Minister of Tourism, Nadia Fettah Alaoui, predicts that the number of Israeli tourists in Morocco next year will be 200,000 tourists, following the normalization of relations between the Kingdom and the Hebrew State.
In an interview with the famous Israeli channel Kan, the minister said that she expects a rise in the number of Israeli tourists visiting Morocco. Prior to normalization, the number of Israeli tourists visiting Morocco was 50,000. The minister also said that the launch of direct flights between Morocco and Israel will help increase the number.
Several agreements between the Kingdom and Israel are expected to be signed, in different areas. These include tourism, during the first visit that will be made by Israeli and U.S. officials to Morocco after the announcement of the standardization decision.
Israeli tourists visited Morocco in large numbers, even before the official normalization of relations. Indeed, their number would have reached 80,000, according to media sources, despite the fact that a direct flight to the Kingdom did not exist and their flights lasted about 14 hours, through a stopover in Turkey, Italy, France, Greece or Malta.
Many Israeli tourists are of Moroccan origin, and come to visit their relatives who still reside in the Kingdom, celebrate the Hiloula or meditate on the graves of their grandparents buried in Morocco.
Cities that preserve their Jewish heritage are the most popular destinations for Israeli tourists, such as Casablanca, Marrakech, Essaouira and Fez.
