A large delegation arrived in Israel last Sunday to discuss several issues of common interest. These included the reopening of liaison offices in Rabat and Tel Aviv, according to several agencies and press sites. Indeed, it is preparing the visit of a second high-level Moroccan delegation.
The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not comment on the content of discussions with the Moroccan delegation during this unprecedented visit, since the announcement of normalization and the agreement of the resumption of official relations between the two countries, under the auspices of U.S. President Donald Trump.
The visit of the Moroccan delegation took place a few days after the signing of cooperation agreements between the two countries in Rabat, under U.S. auspices. It was attended by the Head of Government Saad Eddine El Othmani, the U.S. President’s adviser Jared Kushner and the National Security Adviser of the State of Israel Meir Ben Shabbat. The two countries signed four bilateral conventions, focusing on direct flights, water management, visa exemption for citizens of both countries and encouraging investment and trade between the two countries.
For his part, Moulay Hafid Elalamy, Minister of Industry, Trade, Investment and Digital Economy, had a video conference interview on Monday with his Israeli counterpart (of Moroccan origin) Amir Peretz. The two discussed prospects for Moroccan-Israeli cooperation in several high-potential industrial sectors. According to a statement from the ministry, these are textiles, food processing, green technologies and renewable energy industry.
The statement also said that discussions between the two ministers focused on prospects for fruitful cooperation, based on the economic progress of both countries to meet their development strategies.
For his part, the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, wrote a post reported by the official Facebook page of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs: “I had a historic discussion with His Majesty King Mohammed VI of Morocco yesterday and we agreed on the arrival of a Moroccan delegation in Israel earlier this week to complete the process of opening the diplomatic representations of both countries and the launch of direct flights between Israel and Morocco. It was a warm and friendly meeting. After we finished our discussion, I said: “Mr. King, I want to end this call with a last sentence from the movie Casablanca that I love so much: I think it’s the beginning of a beautiful friendship, and then we laughed together”.
