Brahimi: The “Delta” Variant is as Contagious as “Bouhamroun” (Measles), and the Epidemiological Situation in Morocco is Very Critical

Professor Azzedine Brahimi said on Sunday in a Facebook post that the epidemiological situation in Morocco is very critical. He explained that the Delta variant is spreading rapidly like “Bouhamroun” (measles), and that the number of cases is multiplying in a way that the most pessimistic scenario did not expect:

“Iwa (So)? w daba (what now)? Fin Hna (where are we)? w fin ghadine (and where are we going)?

My answer… let’s make this third wave the last
Morocco is in a very critical epidemiological situation with the epidemic (Covid-19) and the Delta variant spreading as fast as ‘Bouhamroun’ (measles), and the number of reported cases doubling in a way that the most pessimistic scenarios did not expect… I believe that responsible communication remains the most effective approach to deal with the “unknown” and the state of uncertainty experienced by Moroccans… and again, these are personal and unofficial opinions, and may Allah grant us success… and I won’t be brief here because I’m tired of the “good hearing”… […]… Please be patient with me, because the situation demands it and the questions are many…

No matter who is responsible for the current worrying situation due to the Covid pandemic, the responsibility is shared. This situation is an inevitable consequence of the lifting of restrictions on international and national mobility, and the circumstances of the Eid holiday. This, coupled with a feeling of false security among all, whether economic actors or individuals. Secondly, the feeling of tiredness that overwhelmed us, as if we were living a “never-ending day” with Covid; which exhausted us all, and led us to adopt a lenient attitude in our commitment to respect the barrier measures… We must not criminalise either the ordinary citizen or the author of the decisions… We are all shepherds, and each of us is responsible for his flock…

How did we arrive at this situation? …
Everything we are experiencing today; the return of the sudden and strong acceleration of the epidemic, and the alarming increase in the number of cases and deaths … All this was foreseen, and no one should be surprised… We are now paying the bill, and our fervent reverence for customs, and societal behaviors that we have not been able to abandon despite the epidemic … The embracing, the family visits on the occasion of Eid, and the habit of sitting at cafes… Unfortunately, all these behaviours are much more important for a Moroccan than his/her health … and it will take us a long time to correct them… [… and prevention is better than cure…

What is the state of the epidemiological situation? …
I think we are approaching the peak of infections, but the problem is the number of cases in the intensive care unit of more than 1500 patients, in addition to the multiple cases that are being cared for at home… The question is whether our health care system will support all these numbers… And how many of them will we lose…. We have to recognize that if we don’t stop the contaminations today, the situation will deteriorate even more….. because every decision we take today will only see its effects after dozens of days …. and the deaths will continue to increase, or stabilize, to increase! … and for that, each one of us has to be aware and convinced that this virus can infect him/her at any time, and has to take all the known preventive measures in order to avoid being infected himself/herself, and then the others…. This will bring the number of infected people to thousands, which will put hundreds of people in a critical situation, which is not a situation that can be supported by the capacity of any health system… The fact that you are not contaminated (which is a personal interest) greatly limits the contamination of everyone, and the illness and death of others (in the interest of all) …. And what is even more serious and worse is that the Delta variant, which is more than 75% prevalent in Morocco, resembles “Bouhamroun” (measles) in its spread… If it enters a house, it will infect everyone… and the vaccinated will develop a kind of “Rwah” (cold), and the non-vaccinated will play the game of “life or death” with the virus… and thank God that the numbers of these are less than the previous wave… thanks to the vaccine ….

What about containment? …
Firstly, we cannot, as many suggest, do nothing and let the virus spread in the name of an approach seeking “herd immunity”, because this, and in the very short term, means the separation of patients in the death of hundreds of Moroccans within a few months… On the other hand, despite the punitive legal approaches we have to impose the obligation of wearing surgical or cloth masks, most Moroccans do not do so, let alone wear them properly… In the impossibility of a collective commitment to the ‘disciplinary approach’ requiring the proper wearing of masks by 90% of Moroccans while reducing the mobility of individuals by at least 30%, the hypothesis of a tightening of restrictions and confinement in the near future remains the only remaining solution… The top priority for me is to preserve the life of every Moroccan… “
