Morocco: the Actor Rafik Boubker Sued for Offending Islam

The Moroccan police arrested Moroccan actor Rafik Boubker for offending the Islamic religion. The Moroccan Observatory of Freedoms reports that the Casablanca Public Prosecutor’s Office released him on payment of a fine of 5,000 dirhams (about 460 euros).

The 47-year-old Rafik Boubker is accused of having published a video on social networks that shows him “in an abnormal position” while “insulting the Islamic religion and undermining the sacredness of the belief,” according to a statement issued by the Directorate General of National Security. The video clip, in which the actor compares the sensation experienced in prayer to that experienced when drinking alcohol, comparing the chair on which he is sitting to a Mihrab (the place usually occupied by the imam in the mosque), advising drinkers to do their ritual alcohol drinks.

Later, shortly before his arrest, the actor apologized for making what he considered “inappropriate” comments in a new video posted on his Instagram account, in which he talks about his “mistake”, adding that he was not ” conscious” and that it was only a “joke”. The actor Rafik Boubker could face a jail sentence of six months to two years and/or a fine of 20,000 to 200,000 dirhams (between 1,850 and 18,500 euros), according to article 267 of the Moroccan criminal code.
