Moroccans Residing in the United States Demonstrate in Front of Spanish Embassy in New York City

On Monday, June 22, a group of activists from the Moroccan community in the United States will hold a sit-in in front of the Spanish embassy in New York to protest against what they call the “criminal act” that took the life of young Moroccan Elias Tahiri, who died last year in a shelter and rehabilitation center in Almería.

According to statements made by Redoine Kerbal, one of the activists who will take part in the demonstration, to the website www.moroccanjewishtimes.com, this action aims to make the voices of Moroccans heard as well as their protest against such racist acts to which many Moroccans are exposed and which often result in murders that go unreported.

Through this action, the activists aim to get the U.S.-based community to reopen the case of young Elias and to review the court decision in his case in accordance with the law and with all possible transparency, according to Kerbal.

The Moroccan activist called on the media to support the sit-in in order to make the Moroccan voice heard by the Spanish authorities, thus promoting the reopening of the case, which dates back to last year.

Meanwhile, the Moroccan American Union wanted to participate in the sit-in, whose objective is to demand justice for Elias Tahiri, whose death has been described as accidental, following a heart attack. As a result, the security agents were released without conducting a comprehensive investigation into the factors that actually caused the death of the young Moroccan.

It later became clear that what Elias Tahiri suffered was similar to what happened to the American citizen George Floyd, especially after the El Païs newspaper broadcast a video showing security agents subduing the young Moroccan.
