Cinema and Human Rights “Nuit Blanche”, an Edition in Virtual Reality

The Coronavirus has made it impossible for public gatherings to take place, but at least it was not able to prevent everyone from coming together virtually. Organized by the Association of Mediterranean Encounters on Cinema and Human Rights (ARMCDH) in Rabat, this year’s edition will be virtual and will bring together people from all over Morocco and beyond. 

The Era of Digitalization 

According to a press release, the event is free of charge, and exclusively online on the WARCHR virtual platform. Thus, all Moroccans will be able to enjoy the programming of the Nuit Blanche du cinéma during 48 hours by registering via the link: nuitblanche.armcdh.ma. The clip, which is available on ARMCDH’s Youtube channel, is also part of the project “the cinema as a platform for raising awareness of human rights and citizenship”, the organizers said. 

The cultural event will start on 17 July at 8.30 pm with a first evening that will be followed by a number of actors from associations and filmmakers. The second evening will be devoted to a virtual debate on “the role of civil society in environmental protection and the monitoring of public policies”. 

Six Countries Will Be in Honored

The ARMCDH has selected a rich program of documentaries and dramas from six countries: Chile, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Tunisia and Morocco, the press release said. The production dates of the films programmed range from 2015 to 2020 and will be accessible upon registration from 17 July at 21:00. 

This year’s program includes “A Sunny Day” by Faouzi Bansaïdi (Morocco, 2020), “Amussu” by Nadir Bouhmouch (Morocco, 2019), “The Cordillera of Dreams” by Patricio Guzmàn (Chile, 2019) and “The Wind Turns” by Bettina Oberli, (Switzerland, France and Belgium, 2018). 

It will also include “Couscous, the Seeds of Dignity” by Habib Ayeb, (Tunisia, 2017), “L’Odyssée” by Jerome Salle (France, 2016) and “Demain” by Cyril Dion and Mélanie Laurant (France, 2015). 

As far as debates are concerned, two themes will be highlighted, namely: “Environment and civil society: challenges and stakeholders’ expectations” and “Public environmental policies: what synergies? 

It should be noted that the Cinema and Human Rights ” Nuit blanche” is organized with the support of the Heinrich Böll Foundation, UN Women for Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment, the Swiss Embassy in Morocco, in partnership with Hit Radio. 

The project “Cinema as a platform for the promotion of human rights and citizenship” is funded by the European Union and the Embassy of the Netherlands in Morocco, the press release said.
