Abdelmajid Bouzoubaâ: The Doctor of the Poor

Abdelmajid Bouzoubaâ is the first doctor to introduce heart catheterization surgery in Morocco. He was known among his colleagues for his charities and kindness towards the poor and destitute, who came to him every morning at Avicenne Hospital in Rabat to ask for his help, which he never hesitated to offer them, hence his nickname “doctor of the poor”.

Bouzoubaa, who taught a whole generation of skilled doctors in Morocco, is also one of the political leaders who spent years fighting for democratic rights, through trade union activity in the Democratic Labor Confederation (CDT). Bouzoubaa was assistant to its General Secretary, Mohammed Noubir El Amaoui. He was also a founder of the Democratic Organization of Traviail, and a co-founder and leader of the National Health Union.

Bouzoubaa was active for years in the ranks of the Socialist Union of Popular Forces party. He then separated from it and founded the Ittihadi National Congress party, of which he was General Secretary for years.

Bouzoubaa passed away earlier this week at the age of 74, after a long struggle with illness. He didn’t like fame or spotlight and preferred to work in the shadows, as he was an intelligent politician with strong positions. This earned him a special place and immense respect from political actors, parties and rights in the country, regardless of their political orientation, especially after his arrest several times for his revolutionary ideas.

Professor Bouzoubaâ was a specialist in cardiovascular diseases and an example of high morality, honesty and transparency based on the principles of democracy, trust and human values. He was not afraid to publicly assume his beliefs.

Bouzoubaa was born in Fez on March 14, 1946 where he spent much of his childhood and youth. He moved to Casablanca in the early 1970s and entered the field of politics and activism, considering freedom and social justice as priorities. He continued to pay a very high price for this, until he passed away.
