Morocco: The night curfew soon lifted?

The nightly curfew from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. is not going down well. Several sectors directly affected by the crisis are hoping for a return to normal and a total lifting of the curfew.

Professionals in the tourism, events and sports sectors, small and medium-sized businesses, etc., have all said the same thing: “It’s not enough! These are the words that came back most often in the mouths of professionals, heads of companies, associations and federations, following the decision to ease the health restrictions. In a joint declaration, the professionals of the tourist sector of Marrakech, Safi, Essaouira… show their disappointment after the announcement of the lightening of the restrictions related to the Covid-19.

Several reasons are given. The first is that most countries, or tourist destinations, have completely lifted the restrictions and only require the vaccination pass on arrival at the borders. Secondly, competitors in the region, notably Portugal, Spain, Greece and Turkey, “have anticipated, by communicating their willingness to welcome tourists in the best conditions and today, they are well positioned to take over the market share of the destinations that are still cautious”, explain the leaders of the Regional Association of the hotel industry of Marrakech-Safi.

These have reached historic records over the last four months, while Morocco runs the risk of disappearing from the radar. The third and last point, which worries the professionals, is that Morocco is missing the train of an exceptional recovery of world tourism. Morocco is missing out on a favourable opportunity to recover business, instead of imposing unjustified restrictions, especially as the health situation has improved considerably.
