The province of Chefchaouen has the highest suicide rate in the country, with between 30 and 36 cases per year. The latest case was that of a young girl, last Monday, who ended her life by hanging.
In this regard, the president of the Confederation of Associations in the province of Chefchaouen, Mohamed Raboun, told the Moroccan press that the phenomenon is serious, and that it is due to precariousness, cannabis and the influence of foreign soap operas. He added that elderly people end their lives because of their precarious social conditions. “The small farmer used to earn between 50,000 and 60,000 DH annually from cannabis cultivation. Now he earns nothing”, says our source.
This, he adds, is causing many farmers to suffer as they have accumulated debts due to their children’s school fees, living expenses and the like, leading some to commit irreparable acts.
Mohamed Raboun adds that the miserable social conditions and the drought are prompting many families in Chefchaouen province to migrate to Tangiers and other northern cities in search of a better life. “Several wells and springs in the rural areas of Chefchaouen have dried up in recent years, which has accelerated this migration,” he explains.
