“Sex for good grades”: A teacher sentenced to one year in prison in Tangier

The accused was found guilty of sexual harassment before the Court of First Instance of Tangier and sentenced to one year in prison. “We are not satisfied with this verdict because we are talking about very serious facts that will forever mark the victim,” said Saturday to AFP, the lawyer Aisha Guellaa, who plans to appeal the verdict.

Amid a wave of denunciations of sexual blackmail and harassment at Moroccan universities, the 46-year-old Spanish professor was arrested in early January. He was the subject of a “collective complaint by a dozen students” and has been suspended from his pedagogical and administrative duties at the institution since the beginning of this procedure.

The Moroccan judiciary has already sentenced, on January 12, a professor of the University of Settat to two years in prison for sexual blackmail of his students. This is the first verdict in the scandal known as “sex for good grades”, which involves four other teachers whose trial is still ongoing.
