Thousands of Moroccans obtain Spanish nationality

A recent official report revealed that thousands of Moroccans have obtained Spanish nationality, topping the list of naturalized foreigners residing on Spanish soil.

In its latest study on the benefits of foreign residents receiving Spanish nationality, the Spanish National Institute of Statistics confirmed that 42,000 Moroccan residents obtained Spanish nationality, out of 144,012 foreigners residing in Spain in 2021, an increase of 14.1% over the previous year. 

Moroccans came first among naturalized citizens, followed by the Colombian community with 8,328 naturalized citizens, and then Ecuadorian citizens with 8,325 naturalized citizens.

Regarding the geographical distribution of the recipients of Spanish nationality during the year 2021, half of the newly naturalized reside in the region of Catalonia and Madrid, at a rate of 47.4%, and 52.6 are distributed in the rest of the country.

The report confirmed that the majority of foreigners have obtained Spanish nationality by residing in Spain for at least 10 years, legally and continuously, numbering 121,760, and the remaining 21,712 cases involve people whose parents had Spanish nationality, especially those under 20 years old.
