The Atlas Lions are preparing for a very busy 2020, so much so that they won’t even have time to play friendly matches. The national football team will have to play in the qualifying rounds for the two flagship competitions that await it: the 2021 African Cup in Cameroon and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Thus the first official matches under the responsibility of Vahid Halilhodzic will start on 15th and 19th November this year, against Mauritania and Burundi respectively in the CAN 2021 qualifiers, the Arabic-language daily Al Ahdath Al Maghribia recalls in its Thursday 7th November edition.
In fact, to prepare for the next games counting for the African qualifiers, the national team is entering the preparation camp next Monday in Bouznika. And even though Bouznika’s training camp starts next week, the Franco-Bosnian technician has not yet revealed the final list of players called up.
According to the Arabic-language daily, the coach prefers to wait until the European Champions League matches are played before unveiling his list. He had to follow the performances of his key players such as Hakimi, Ziyech, Noussair Mazraoui, Youness Belhanda, Adel Taarabt and Youssef El Arabi.
With regard to the 2022 World Cup qualifiers in Qatar, the African Football Confederation should make some changes. The qualifiers will take place in two phases. The selections will be divided into ten groups of four teams. The top ten teams in their respective groups will face off in a final play-off phase, in the form of round-trip matches. The good news for Morocco is that it will be part of the first hat.
