Eyal Golan: The Sultan of Mizrahi

The Israeli singer Eyal Golan is originally from Morocco. His father, Daniel Bitton, is a Moroccan Jew. His mother, Ronit Jamil, is a Yemeni Jew. Born in Rehovot, Israel, he grew up in an environment full of oriental music and has become one of Israel’s most gifted artists in the performing of this musical genre.

Eyal Golan, whose real name is Eyal Bitton, was born on April 12, 1971. His parents divorced when he was four years old. He grew up under the care of his grandmother. As a young boy, he was passionate about football and music. So he joined the club “Hapoel Marmarouk” when he was only 8 years old. He stayed there until 2002. The managers of this club were the first to support him in his artistic career, when he produced, under his own account, his first album in 1995. This album was a failure and went unnoticed by the media, who paid no attention to it.

However, it did not stop him from trying to stay in the business, nor did it stop him from changing the musical style he had opted for since childhood, known as “Mizrahi”, a musical genre that was specific to Eastern Jews and which was totally rejected in the Hebrew state.

Golan began his career in 1989. He was only 18 years old at the time. He was active in the repair work, and at the same time he performed in nightclubs and gave concerts for friends and neighbors, before joining the group “Atenix”, which was looking for a singer specialized in oriental music. Thanks to this group, he made his real breakthrough in the mid-90s.

Since then, he received numerous awards in Israel and was named singer of the year more than once. In 2010, he won the title of “Singer of the Decade in Israel”. He has given concerts in the biggest halls and theaters in Israel, just as he sang at the “Olympia” in Paris.

Eyal Golan has been so successful in imposing his musical style that the media and critics have dubbed him the “Sultan of Oriental singing in Israel”.

In addition to his artistic fame, Golan became known for his relationships and love stories which were reported by the media and crowned by his marriage in 2002 to Ilanit Levy, Miss Israel, who he separated from in 2008. He has also become known for his trouble with the law, tax evasion, drug use and sexual acts with minors.
