Abdeladim Chennaoui: The Multi-Talented Artist

The Moroccan artistic and cultural scene has just lost the artist Abdeladim Chennaoui, a native of Casablanca. He was born in the famous “Derb Sultan” district. Chennaoui was considered one of Morocco’s greatest artists and had multiple talents. Not only was he an actor, but he also wrote and directed, not forgetting the fact that he was active in the media and television, even before Morocco had its official television. In fact, he had joined a French channel during the colonial era, before joining the national radio and then Radio Medi1 since its creation. He was also among the first people to work in the field of advertising in Morocco.

Chennaoui began his career in the 1950s. His first play “the pharmacist” aroused the interest of the great artist of the time, Bachir Laalaj, who integrated him into his troupe. During this period, Chennaoui spent a few years and took part in several performances at the Verdun and Al kawakeb cinemas in Casablanca.

He later went to Egypt to study cinema. He spent two years in Cairo and obtained a diploma in directing, before returning to Morocco and founding the theatre troupe “Al Oukhowa al arabibiya” in 1961, as cinema did not yet exist in Morocco at that time. It is this troupe that allowed the emergence of many great Moroccan actors such as Touria Jabrane, Ahmed Snoussi, Mostafa Zaari, Mostafa Dassoukine, Abdellatif Hilal, Mohammed Majd, Salah-Eddine Benmoussa, Souad Saber, Zhour Slimani, among others actors.

In the field of television, Abdeladim Chennaoui presented many famous programs in the 1970s, including “Fruits à offrir”, “Avec les Stars”, “Club des variétés”, “Lampes aux balcons de nuit” and “Votre chance ce soir” which he presented on 2M. He also presented programs on the radio station “Midi 1”, including “L’art dans le monde”, through which he demonstrated his great abilities as a journalist, before returning to the cinema and theatre again to present his short film “L’ascenseur légal”.
