Jewish Artist: Ra’anan Levy the Essentialist

 Ra’anan Levy the Essentialist

Ra’anan Levy, “L’épreuve du miroir”, Maeght Foundation, Saint Paul de Vence, December 7, 2019 to March 8, 2020.

Ra’anan Levy never ceases to turn the everyday into a strangeness. He creates at the same time visions of space, of the flight of time, of emptiness and absence in abyss games of perception.

Through the matter of the world as well as painting, he produces the essence of it in a work as much of appearance as of disappearance within deserted interiors which bring back to the artist’s view of the world.

The subjectivity of his interpretation remains extremely acute and obsessive. She proves a total commitment in painting as well as in engraving. For this exhibition he has produced a large number of prints in single or limited editions.

Everything in the work plays on an exercise in ambiguity: on the one hand, bulimia and fullness. On the other, emptiness or what one critic calls “anorexia”.

All in a jumble of forms, fragments and things like those found in his studio. They come back in his canvases and are invitations to pass through to discover another world of mirrors, of empty rooms where a passage always remains.
