Jewish and Israeli Photographer: Israeli Women on the Front – Debbie Zimelman

Israeli Women on the Front – Debbie Zimelman

Debbie Zimelman, “Women on the Front Lines, Inside the Combat Units of the Israeli Army”.

Debbie Zimelman spent five years photographing female combatants in the Israeli army. “It gave me a glimpse of something I never experienced before and helped me understand much more. It gave me a glimpse of something I never experienced and helped me understand much more,” says the artist, who never had the opportunity to serve in the Israeli army: she was too old when she immigrated to Israel.

She seized these women by inserting herself into combat units. According to the artist, this is the first book of its kind authorized by Israeli army officials.
She was able to tame the women warriors and talk at length with them before they took the pose or were seized in action.

Each portrait becomes a setting in the presence of everyday heroines who are proud to defend their homeland. There is a “truth” of incorporation that gives anonymous women a nobility made of simplicity. They do not play the heroines but remain proud Amazons of their commitment.

Underneath their uniforms each one is pugnacious and enduring. This does not prevent the photographer from emphasizing femininity. Such shots are as stimulating as they are attentive to women struggling for the long term in the snapshots that Debbie Zimelman knows how to reach and hold on to, and which, starting with her art, goes beyond mere testimony.
