The Minister of Justice, Mohamed Ben Abdelkader, said Monday in Rabat that his department is drafting a law on the rights of the child.
In response to an oral question on the need to tighten sanctions against kidnappers and rapists, put by the Authenticity and Modernity group in the House of Representatives, Ben Abdelkader explained that the ministry has conducted consultations in this direction this morning with the National Observatory for the Rights of the Child, as part of the expansion of the circle of consultations to local civil actors.
The ministry is committed to the respect of the Charter for the Protection of Children’s Rights, signed in 2019 at the initiative of Princess Lalla Meryem, President of the National Observatory for the Rights of the Child, stressed the minister, noting that children and minors need an integrated law to protect them.
The government official also clarified that the criminal policy is not limited to punishment, since from a punitive, inclusive and social point of view, it takes into consideration human rights, noting that the current criminal law, be it Articles 471 and 484 or other articles relating to crimes of indecent assault or kidnapping, provides for prison sentences of up to 10 years.
