ASMEX: Chinese market, a boon for Moroccan exporters

Morocco and the Chinese province of Shandong launched, on Monday, a dialogue on ways to strengthen the economic partnership between the Kingdom and this province considered as one of the main engines of the Chinese economy.

This session, which is part of the Shandong province’s initiative called “Bridge to Africa”, was attended by representatives of more than 80 Chinese companies who came to inquire about investment opportunities in Morocco.

In a speech at the opening of this session, Hassan Sentissi El Idrissi, President of the Moroccan Association of Exporters (ASMEX), highlighted the political, economic and structural assets of the Kingdom that could attract new Chinese investments.

“I am always fascinated by China’s prodigious development and we at ASMEX want China to be one of our privileged partners,” he said. Mr. Sentissi said that “Morocco, due to its geostrategic position, offers many opportunities for Chinese investors to penetrate new markets, especially in Africa. Indeed, thanks to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement, launched in January 2021, which provides for a 90% exemption between African countries, Chinese companies, which could relocate part of their production to Morocco, will benefit from an unprecedented opportunity.

“China clearly shows its will to develop its economic and commercial relations with Morocco as a gateway to the rest of Africa. Moroccan exporters and industrialists must take advantage of this to seize the business opportunities offered by this market,” noted Mr. Sentissi. In this context and with its 40 years of existence, ASMEX is working to develop partnerships between its members operating in all sectors of activity, and the various foreign economic operators.

“We wish to contribute to the development of economic, agricultural and social partnership in a Win-Win framework between Moroccan companies and their Chinese counterparts,” insisted the ASMEX boss. “Moreover, convinced that the economic operator who wishes to become international should never limit himself to his own neighbours, Mr. Sentissi affirms that “Distance and logistics should in no case create a handicap for the competitiveness of our companies.

Together, and I am convinced of this, we can manage to create significant trade flows to further develop our strategic partnership,” he concluded in an optimistic and confident tone.
