Morocco is to build 11 new prisons

Speaking at the oral question session in the House of Councillors held on Tuesday, Baitas said that the Delegate General for Prison Administration and Rehabilitation has proposed a program to increase the capacity of prisons in accordance with the values of human rights to which the Kingdom adheres.

The minister said that the overcrowding in prisons is mainly due to the large number of judicial proceedings of appeal, as is the case in Salé, which has a high rate of overcrowding at the local prison Al-Arjat, given that the judicial district to which it belongs includes seven courts.

In this regard, he stressed that the General Delegation for Prison Administration and Rehabilitation (DGAPR) has opened 23 new prisons between 2014 and 2022, and built three prisons with a total capacity of 5,730 places, noting that the construction of a new prison in Essaouira has been launched.

The Delegation works to improve the conditions of detention by improving infrastructure, especially in terms of space and ventilation. Baitas revealed, in this wake, that the division of the local prison of Ain Sebaâ 1, rehabilitation of the Reform and Rehabilitation Center of Ain Sebaâ, and expansion of the local prison of Salé 2 while providing a capacity of 208 beds, are progressing in accordance with the programs of humanization of conditions of detention
