Rise in covid-19-related deaths: Moroccans are concerned

Morocco has recorded 11 deaths related to the coronavirus, which has frightened citizens, fearing a return to restrictive measures.

On the Web, several Internet users have expressed, in fact, their concern, especially since the Eid al-Adha and the summer vacations are fast approaching. They recalled the forecasts of experts, who estimated that the cases will continue to climb because of family gatherings and non-compliance with the barrier gestures.

As a reminder, the Ministry of Health and Welfare has called for an urgent booster dose of the Covid 19 vaccine to increase the level of immunity.

The Ministry urges all people aged 60 and 18 years and over, as well as people with chronic diseases to receive the booster dose, six months after receiving the 3rd dose, said the coordinator of the National Center for Emergency Operations of Public Health, Mouad Mrabet, during a meeting with the press devoted to the presentation of the monthly assessment of the epidemic situation (08 June/04 July 2022)

Morocco has been experiencing for six weeks the fourth wave of SARS-CoV-2 virus infection and the second wave of Omicron, he noted, noting that the latest reports from the National Genomic Watch Consortium indicated that the Omicron mutant is still prevalent with two main sub-mutants (BA.5 70.5%) and (BA.2 23%), compared to 6% for other sub-mutants.

The rate of positivity of the tests has reached 22.6% during the last two weeks, after having recorded an increase for five consecutive weeks, he explained, noting that the reproduction index of cases is now 1. This fact is synonymous with a possible peak of new cases, knowing that the spread of the virus has passed to the level of red vigilance in most regions of the Kingdom.

According to Mrabet, the new dangerous and critical cases admitted to the resuscitation services have evolved without reaching the level of the 1st wave of Omicron.

Thus, in the last six weeks, 422 patients were admitted to intensive care and resuscitation, compared to 1,925 who were admitted during the same period during the 1st wave of Omicron.

Regarding deaths, the official noted that they are still stable at a low level, with a total of 42 deaths recorded in the last six weeks, he noted.

Regarding the national vaccination campaign, the coverage rate of the booster dose reached 18%, with a continuity rate of 27.6%.

The Ministry also calls on citizens to respect the preventive measures especially during the period of Eid al-Adha, urging people with respiratory symptoms to wear the mask and stop all professional or social activities while going to health facilities for diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
