Morocco-Japan: Future opportunities to be seized

On a working visit to Tokyo as part of the launch of the brand “Morocco Now”, the Moroccan delegation, led by Mohcine Jazouli, Minister Delegate in charge of Investment, Convergence and Evaluation of Public Policies, was able to see the enthusiasm and interest of Japanese private operators, agencies and institutions for the economic potential of Morocco, now perceived as a preferred destination for the development of their investments and trade in the region.

Organized by the Moroccan Investment and Export Development Agency (AMDIE) with the support of the Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco in Japan, this visit was an opportunity to meet with more than twenty economic leaders in sectors as diverse as automotive, aeronautics, food processing, textiles, tourism, renewable energy and infrastructure.

They unanimously welcomed the socio-economic progress of Morocco, its political stability and the leadership of King Mohammed VI, which have positioned Morocco as a priority destination for the development and diversification of Japanese investments but also as a regional platform for the development of their exports to Europe and Africa in particular.

The Moroccan delegation was also able to note the alignment of objectives between Morocco and Japan to facilitate the energy transition of their respective economies through the development of renewable energy, a field where the Kingdom is cited as “regional champion” thanks to the royal vision.

Japanese officials, including the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Vice Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, and the heads of the Trade and Investment Development Agency, Jetro, and the International Cooperation Agency, Jica, welcomed the recent entry into force of the Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement and the Double Taxation Agreement, which will further encourage Japanese companies to invest in Morocco. There is
thus a momentum to be seized, especially in a context of relocation of production chains and disruption of supply chains that the world is experiencing.

On this occasion, Nobuhiko Sasaki, CEO of Jetro, suggested the organization of a business forum between the Moroccan and Japanese private sectors, “not only in the traditional sectors where Japanese companies are present in Morocco as the automotive, but also in new target sectors such as aerospace, hospitality and renewable energy.
