Handicrafts: Exports up 17% at the end of September

To the U.S., the majority of exports were made through Casablanca (84%), with the main products exported pottery & stone (63%) and carpet (25%). With a smaller share, Marrakech (11%) exported mainly carpet (23%), blankets (19%) and wood (16%).

At the end of September 2022, exports of handicrafts achieve an increase of 17% generating a turnover (CA) of 728.11 MDH. According to the indicators of the Observatory of the craft, the pottery & stone comes in first place of the most exported products with a share of 32% at the end of September. This family of products shows a growth of 28% recording a turnover that would approach 230.30 MDH during the first nine months of 2022. In second place, the carpet which represents a share of 21% was exported to 149.55 MDH during the same period (+97%). The third place goes to basketry products which constitute 15% of market share. These products have achieved an export increase of 36% compared to the end of September 2022 generating a turnover of 109.10 MDH. In this ranking traditional clothing is fourth with a share of 14% of exports made at the end of September 2022. The latter are growing by 79% with a turnover of about 100.46 MDH. By country of destination, the United States are first with a share of 37% during the first nine months of 2022. Exports of handicrafts to this country are up 51% reaching a turnover of nearly 272 MDH at the end of September 2022. In second place, products shipped to France amounted to more than 108.29 MDH, up 27% compared to the first nine months of 2021. They represent a market share of 15%. In third place we find the handicrafts destined for Spain (9% market share) with a turnover of 67.72 MDH up 27% compared to the end of September 2022.

By country grouping, the EU has a share of 40%. On the other hand, exports to Europe reach more than 292 MDH, down 2% at the end of September 2022 compared to the same date in 2021. As for the Arab countries, they constitute a share of 13%. The turnover of handicrafts exported to these countries amounted to more than 94.87 MDH, up 23%. By city of export, Casablanca holds a share of 58%. In this sense, the handicrafts shipped from the metropolis are up 44% with a turnover of 419.07 MDH. It is followed by the ocher city with a turnover of 126.71 MDH, down 35% compared to the end of September 2021. Marrakech has a market share of 17%. For its part, the city of Fez has exported 61.16 MDH of handicrafts, down 7%. Fez occupies a share of 8% in 2022. Further north, Tangier shows a turnover of handicrafts exported about 47.67 MDH (+35%) and holds a share of 7 to end September 2022. In the month of September alone, exports recorded are in positive evolution of 11%. Two families of products have participated most in this increase in export turnover, with the carpet in the lead, followed by pottery & stone, through successive contributions in percentage points of 7 and 6%. During the month of September 2022, carpet exports were shipped mainly from Casablanca (60%), with the USA as the main destination (59%), followed by France (22%). With a share of 17%, Marrakech has exported, in the same period, the carpet mainly to the category “Other European countries” (39%), mainly the Scandinavian countries (79%), and to the USA (25%). From Rabat (16%), the carpet was exported mainly to Germany (99%). On the other hand, the largest share of exports of pottery & stone (77%) was realized by Casablanca, with the USA as the main destination, whose share exceeded two thirds of exports from Casablanca (71%) in pottery & stone. Meanwhile, the United States and Spain are the destinations that have recorded the highest contributions in the growth of export turnover in September, with respective contributions in percentage points of 6 and 3%.

Through Tangier (21%), it is mainly products in basketry (65%) and pottery & stone (16%) that have been exported, “says the department of crafts. It should also be noted that Casablanca, Nador and Tangier are the cities with the largest contribution in percentage points to the export turnover of September, with respective contributions in percentage points of 10, 6 and 4%.

Thus, 50% of Casablanca’s exports involved pottery & stone, shipped mainly to the USA (71%). Carpets (23%) were also exported from Casablanca largely to the U.S. (59%), followed by France (22%). Basketry products (13%) were shipped primarily to Spain (49%), England (16%) and the USA (15%). It also appears that 95% of exports from Nador have been traditional clothing, which were exported exclusively to Algeria. From Tangier, shipments of pottery & stone have concerned half of exports from this city, mainly to Australia (53%) and France (29%). “The city of the Straits has also exported basketry (24%) to Spain (66%) and Italy (26%), as well as carpet (17%), to France (49%), Japan (18%) and the USA (16%), “concludes the same source.
