Moroccan Sahara: Mauritanian President Reaffirms his Country’s Position

The President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania assured that his country has not changed one bit, and will not change, its position on the Sahara issue.

“Mauritania has recognized the “SADR”, and our final position remains positive and neutral as opposed to immobility.,” said Mohamed Ould Cheikh El-Ghazouani. And this, he explained “because it’s one of the constants of the country’s foreign policy, regardless of the leader or the development of the issue”.

As a reminder, since 1984, the southern neighbor of the Kingdom has maintained relations with the separatists of the Polisario, while even the United Nations has refused to recognize the pseudo republic.

This statement by the Mauritanian President was made at the first press conference he has given since his election in June 2019. Referring to the conflict over the Moroccan Sahara, with reference to the Gulf crisis, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El-Ghazouani did not fail, however, to stress that “the two cases are not comparable”.

It should be noted that this first press meeting of the Mauritanian president with media of his country was recently prevented by his cordial meeting, in Nouakchott, with Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans living abroad.
