Princess Lalla Meryem Presides over an Event in Marrakech

Princess Lalla Meryem, president of the National Union of Moroccan Women (UNFM), presided over the ceremony to celebrate International Women’s Day on Sunday at the Bahia Palace in Marrakech.

After reading verses from the Holy Quran and performing the national anthem, Princess Lalla Meryem followed, on this occasion, a video presentation on violence against women.

Princess Lalla Meryem also followed a presentation on the Marrakech Declaration 2020, made by the President of the Ethics Committee of the UNFM and coordinator of the preparation and monitoring of conventions, Ms. Amina Oufroukhi.

Then, the statement of commitment to the Marrakech Declaration was signed by the Minister of National Education, Vocational Training, Higher Education and Scientific Research, Mr. Said Amzazi, the Minister of Health, Mr Khalid Ait Taleb, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Government Spokesman, Mr El Hassan Abyaba, and the Minister of Solidarity, Social Development, Equality and the Family, Ms Jamila El Moussali.

The signing of the Marrakech Declaration, constituting a set of commitments by the departments concerned with the issue of violence against women, testifies to the willingness of the public authorities to become more involved in this fight jointly with the UNFM. The stakeholders are planning to set up a Council to monitor the implementation of the Declaration.

This Council will take concrete action on mechanisms to provide care for victims, combat stereotypes of women in the public media, and promote a culture of non-violence through basic and higher education, and will present the results of its work on March 8, 2021.
