United Nations: The Moroccan Najat Rochdi Appointed Deputy Special Coordinator for Lebanon

The United Nations Secretary General, António Guterres, announced Friday the appointment of the Moroccan Najat Rochdi as Deputy Special Coordinator of the United Nations for Lebanon as well as Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator.

Ms. Rochdi is taking over the post from Switzerland’s Philippe Lazzarini, who completed his mission on March 31. “The Secretary-General is grateful for his achievements and sends his best wishes for success in his new appointment as Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA),” his spokesman said in a statement.

Najat Rochdi has more than 20 years of experience in development and humanitarian assistance and international coordination in conflict and post-conflict areas, most recently as a senior adviser to the UN Special Envoy for Syria and Director at the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Geneva.

She was previously Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator of the UN Peacekeeping Mission in the Central African Republic (UNMISCA). She had also served as Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Cameroon and Deputy Director of the Representative Office of the United Nations Development Program in Geneva.

Ms. Rochdi has a PhD in information systems from the National Institute of Statistics and Applied Economics in Rabat and a Master’s degree in mathematics and fundamental applications from the University of Paris Sud 11.
