Israel Denies Involvement in the Beirut Explosion and Offers Assistance

At a time when reports were circulating about Israel’s involvement in the explosion in the Lebanese capital last Tuesday, and after being blamed for sending a rocket of explosive substances and fireworks at the port facilities, many Israeli officials denied the accusations. In fact, they claimed that the Hebrew state had nothing to do with the incident, which resulted in hundreds of deaths and thousands of injured and homeless people.

The Israeli Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi told Channel 12 (Israel) that the explosion was probably caused by a fire, warning people to be cautious with their speculations and accusations. The Ministry’s social networking page “Israel Speaks Arabic” added that Israel has offered medical and humanitarian help to Lebanon through international security and political services, which was also affirmed by the words of Defense Minister Benny Gantz.

For their part, many Israelis have expressed through social networks their solidarity with the Lebanese people following the explosion that has shaken the country. They also wished the injured a speedy recovery and offered their condolences to the families of the victims. The Tel Aviv City Hall building was illuminated with the colors of the Lebanese flag, as a way of showing solidarity with the Lebanese people.

President of Israel Reuven Rivlin also expressed his support with the people of Lebanon in a statement reported by the Israeli and international media: “We share the pain of the Lebanese people and sincerely offer them our help”.

As for Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu, he gave orders to his government to contact the United Nations special envoy for the Middle East peace process to offer Israel’s help to Lebanon. He added in a tweet on his official Twitter account that he will approve medical and humanitarian aid for Lebanon.

The Lebanese authorities have opened an investigation to find out the reasons for the explosion at the port of Beirut, whose echo reached Cyprus. The capital has been officially declared as a disaster area and has announced a state of emergency for two weeks, in addition to an official mourning state that will last for three days, starting on Wednesday.
