Moroccans woke up last Saturday to a hideous crime: Adnane, a child from Tangier, was kidnapped, raped and killed. This crime resurrected the debate around the death penalty that several people have demanded against pedophile crimes, while others have insisted on defending the right to life and are against the application of the penalty because it goes against human rights, regardless of the awfulness of the crime committed.
The Facebook pages have therefore been a battleground between supporters and opponents of the death penalty. Especially after the creation of the page “One million signatures to execute the killer of the child Adnane”, and the widespread sharing of a petition on social networks also calling for the death penalty for the rapist and killer of Adnane.
One of the most controversial facebook posts was the one written by researcher Amazigh Ahmed Assid. He considered that those who call for the execution of the criminal are no less monstrous than the criminal they want revenge on. Assid’s comments shocked his subscribers, while his “enemies”, especially those of the Islamic movement, accused him of “pedophilia”.
Assid explained in the post that caused this controversy: “The murder of an innocent child and his deprivation of his right to live is a shameful crime and the reactions of people are natural. We must fight to never hear of such a scenario again, it is a national duty. But the emphasis of some people to apply the death penalty shows their desire for revenge instead of punishing the criminal. It is not society’s job to set up guillotines and impose sentences, it is the duty of justice, and if Morocco is still among the countries that sentence the death penalty (without applying it), then it is time to open a more serious debate on the subject, as well as on the subject of violence against children. Those who are eager to execute the criminal should be aware that countries that apply this penalty such as Iran, China and the United States are countries where the rate of hideous crimes is higher, which means that those who demand the execution of the criminal only think of applying their internal rage and violence, and this is not a solution to the problem”.
Assid added: “The kidnapping of children for rape is a phenomenon that has become more and more recurrent lately. We need to think seriously about solutions to stop it. The citizens who have rushed to express their desire to kill the criminal and mutilate his corpse are no less cruel than he is. Our sincere condolences to the child’s family.”
