Price rises: the government majority sticks together and focuses on the social state

In a difficult context, the governmental majority closes ranks, this is the main conclusion of the meeting of representatives of the RNI, Istiqlal and WFP who gathered, this Tuesday, at the headquarters of the RNI to discuss the strategy to follow to cope with the soaring prices and the drought that severely impact the purchasing power. This meeting, which is part of the consultation established by the Charter of the majority, was attended by all secretaries general, accompanied by the heads of parliamentary groups. Faced with the challenge of inflation, the Executive intends to continue to execute the government programme to the letter. This was made known by the Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch, during the press conference held on the sidelines of this meeting.

The Head of the Executive did not hide the fact that the soaring prices of raw materials at the international level put a heavy burden on the state budget in terms of compensation. In this regard, Aziz Akhannouch assured that the government will continue to cushion the shock of inflation through the subsidization of basic necessities such as gas, wheat and sugar so that the citizen is not impacted. Aziz Akhannouch reassured that the prices of electricity, wheat and flour have not increased.

The same goes for agricultural products, whose prices remain stable, according to him, despite the effects of the drought. Despite the delay in the rains and the water stress, the Head of the Executive was optimistic about the outcome of the agricultural season. Concerning transport prices, which have caused much controversy in recent days, the Head of Government said that a dialogue will be opened with transporters to find a response to their demands so that the citizen’s pocket is not affected after the increase in fuel prices.

For his part, the Secretary General of the Istiqlal Party and Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka, expressed the government’s willingness to remain faithful to its electoral commitments and to continue building the social state. “We are the government of challenges,” he said at the press conference, adding that the problems facing the government are inherited from the policies of previous years.

The same remark was made by WFP boss and Minister of Justice Abdellatif Ouahbi, who, in his speech, said that the Executive is determined to remedy the problems inherited from the previous mandate. “We will face the current situation with a united majority,” he said. Thus, the government coalition seems to want to manage its first major crisis with serenity and a spirit of consultation. In the final communiqué of the meeting, the majority trio welcomed the emergency plan launched by the government, under royal instructions, to deal with the effects of the drought. This plan has a total budget of 10 billion dirhams.

The three parties were also pleased with the progress of social projects, notably the generalisation of medical coverage and the dialogue with the unions.
