The ninth deputy mayor of Marrakech, in charge of hygiene and public lighting, continues to cause controversy after renovating his house in violation of urban planning rules. The daily Al Akhbar reports in its Tuesday, March 8 edition that the elected official Kamal Majid built a cellar in his residence although the law does not allow it in this district of Daoudiate.
Several associations and human rights activists called on the region’s wilaya to use its powers to enforce the law against the offender. This case was relayed by Internet users on social networks who posted photos of the ticket and called on the mayor to intervene to stop the work, which is still in progress.
The daily Al Akhbar reports that several civil society actors have asked the vice-president, Kamal Majid, to present the building permit for the cellar in his house, knowing that it is forbidden to build in this area. The same speakers asked the mayor of Marrakech, who presides over the urban planning sector in the city and heads the Ministry of Housing, to intervene in this matter as soon as possible.
The daily recalls that Kamal Majid has had disputes with several actors since he took office. These include the dispute he had with the company in charge of water and electricity distribution. The deputy mayor has not paid his water and electricity bills for several months, thus accumulating a debt of 40,000 dirhams by the end of December 2021. A dispute that led the garbage collectors, who were on strike last month, to let him know that they could not trust him to negotiate with them, knowing that he was not even in good standing with the above-mentioned company.
The vice-president had also caused a controversy during the session of the Gueliz district when he accused the president’s deputies of having validated customary deeds of sale concerning land although these transactions were illegal.
