Tomato prices are causing havoc

In the various markets and souks in the Kingdom, the price of tomatoes has risen sharply since Sunday, reaching 13 dirhams per kilo, according to several consumers, whereas it cost only 4 or 5 dirhams a few days earlier.
Contacted by the Moroccan press, the president of the National Federation of Consumer Associations (FNAC), Ouadie Madih, explains that this increase is not an isolated case but is part of the series of price increases for raw materials, gas and energy that is spreading rapidly throughout the world. Moreover, “tomatoes are a fruit that Moroccans consume a lot, especially during the fast-approaching month of Ramadan. This rise in prices augurs even higher prices during this holy month.

Madih calls on the government to intervene in order to support the purchasing power of citizens who are suffering from the rise in food prices. He also called on suppliers to reduce their profit percentages and help consumers.
For its part, the Ministry of Interior had affirmed, a few days ago, that the volume of stocks of foodstuffs and other basic materials and the expected quantities to be supplied and distributed are sufficient to meet the demand during the holy month of Ramadan and the following months for all basic products, especially those in high demand before and during the holy month.
