After the resumption of relations, Madrid celebrates the millenary Moroccan-Spanish relations

This event owes its birth to a memorandum of understanding on cultural and museum cooperation and was signed on February 13, 2019, under the Presidency of HM King Mohammed VI and King Felipe of Spain, between the Foundation and the Spanish Ministry of Culture and Sports on cultural and museum cooperation, says the FNM in a statement.

The exhibition “Around the Columns of Hercules: Millennial Relations between Morocco and Spain” is, according to the FNM, the affirmation of a common history, which will contribute to strengthening the historical friendship between the two peoples.

The exhibition will bring together more than 300 objects and artifacts from museums managed by the FNM and Spanish museums, and will reveal the common historical heritage and mutual recognition of neighborly relations between the two kingdoms throughout history. These works will highlight the chronological evolution of these relations in five major periods, from prehistory to the Middle Ages, adds the same source.

The first concretization of the Memorandum of Understanding signed on February 13, 2019 between the two countries was “Moroccan Trilogy 1950-2020”, mounted in April 2021 at the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid. This was the first time that a major Spanish museum presented the History of contemporary Moroccan art and the dynamism of the Moroccan art scene.

This event comes at a time when the two neighboring countries are entering a new phase in their relations, with a dynamic of opportunities, especially after the Spanish support for the Moroccan Autonomy Plan, which it now considers “the most serious, realistic and credible basis” to resolve the dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
